Tom Troler STUDIO – honest opinion from a working photographer who earns money with the R6 Mark II

Hi! I’m Tom Troler and the Canon R6 Mark II has been my main work camera for over a year now (I bought it right after release in 2022). Weddings, portraits, corporate videos, evening shoots – everything. This summer Canon finally released the R6 Mark III and, of course, I had to find out: Is it worth another €1,200–€1,600?

I haven’t had the chance to fully test the Mark III in real jobs yet (it’s only just hitting the European market, mostly pre-orders), but I held it in my hands at the Canon presentation, went through the menu, tried the EVF and compared the specs in detail. So here’s my honest take – from someone who lives off the R6 Mark II and doesn’t want to throw money away.

If you’re searching for “Canon R6 Mark II vs Mark III 2025”, “is the R6 Mark III upgrade worth it” or “Canon R6 Mark III price Europe”, you’re in the right place. Let’s break it down properly.

For a simpler overview, I recommend watching a quick presentation about the new Mark III from Canon.

First impressions from holding the Mark III (Canon Europe presentation)

I held the Mark III, flipped through the menu, tried the EVF – it’s really better (you see much more detail in low light). 60 fps sounds insane, but for weddings where I shoot people, the 40 fps on the Mark II is more than enough. Internal 6K 60p is awesome – no external recorder, which still hurts on the Mark II. But 90 % of my jobs end up in 4K for Instagram/YouTube, so… unnecessary.

Stacked sensor = less rolling shutter – great for fast movement (bride throwing bouquet). But I mostly shoot people, not sports.

When the Mark III is worth it (yes – upgrade)

  • You shoot a lot of video (6K/7K internal, Open Gate) → saves time and money on an external recorder.
  • You photograph fast action (sports, wildlife, kids at weddings) → 60 fps + pre-shooting is noticeable.
  • You want a “final” camera for 4–5 years and will sell the Mark II now (used price still around €1,600–€1,800).

When the Mark III is NOT worth it (no – stay with Mark II, like me)

  • Weddings, portraits, landscapes, corporate video → the Mark II is still in the top 3 hybrid bodies under €2,200.
  • For the saved €1,200–€1,600 you can buy an RF 85mm f/1.2 or RF 28-70mm f/2 → everyone will notice the glass, not the body.
  • The Mark II got a firmware update this year that added some AI tricks from the Mark III.

My verdict (Mark II owner for over a year)

I’m not upgrading. The Mark II is still top class for my work and for that money I’d rather invest in glass or lighting. The Mark III is a great evolution, but for me (and most wedding/portrait photographers) the difference isn’t €1,500.

As soon as the Mark III is widely available in Europe and I can borrow it for a full wedding, I’ll do a longer test – promise! 😄

What about you? Do you have the Mark II and are tempted by the third? Or waiting for the R5 Mark III? Write below – happy to chat!
